Great comment.

Language without culture is nothing.

Thank you, Eli!

"With Russian, or Italian, I might gain 1000 years of insight into the culture by learning a single word, whereas learning a word in Esperanto teaches me nothing more than the word."

That's a great argument for not learning construct languages like Esperanto! And being a lover of etymology I must say the history of the words helps me pick up way more than the single word I'm learning.

And when learning a new language, I'm mostly interested in its culture rather than the language per se. I can't say I love people *individually* --- though people certainly help --- but I do love the history they have built throughout the years.

Great interview :-)

Thanks for clearing that up! :-)

That sounds like great service!

Yes, I agree with you, most airlines are mediocre at best. You pay hundreds of dollars and they give you 20cm leg space. Then they advise you to move your body a lot because sitting for long stretches is unhealthy, but there's no freaking space to do so!

Now, I take it that for national (US) flights you don't go to Germany first, right? :-)

In reply to <a href="https://www.smartlanguagelearner.com/interview-randy-hunt/#comment-5529">Erol</a>.

Most American airlines are horrible. They have bad service, bad policies, uncomfortable seats, and are filled with irritating people. Most of them practice overbooking, which often results in passengers being left overnight somewhere unplanned and having to re-plan their trips after delays.

On Lufthansa, however, I get a decent, comfortable seat. I get a clean airplane. I get pleasant service from the flight crew. They don't overbook. They care about their customers/passengers.

I've had several occasions where I was landing on one flight for connection to another, and they've held the connecting plane for me while I raced through the airport afraid I would be left behind. And once, we even had an in-flight (health) emergency and had to make an unplanned landing mid-flight which delayed arrival by almost 3 hours. Everyone onboard was worried about missing connections, but before we arrived in Germany, Lufthansa had already re-booked EVERY passenger on new connections so as soon as we got off the plane there were tickets ready for us. That's amazing service, and I would never get it from any US-based carrier.
