In reply to Liz Main.

Hi Liz,

You think so? Well, it sure helps immensely but it isn't an absolute requirement. If you are in the country and you don't surround yourself with other foreigners you just have to speak and hear the language. There are no alternatives. If you learn from home, there's always the obstacle of having to schedule and do the things needed to learn the language. That requires discipline. The less obstacles, the easier it is to keep doing something. So in that aspect, it's easier to learn a new language in a country where it is spoken.

However, by just being in a foreign country you won't magically pick up a new language. It isn't as easy as they sometimes make it out to be. You still have to put in an effort.

About the lunch, make sure you eat something that doesn't taste too good. :-)

What an interesting interview. I've always loved Spanish, in particular. The only problem is that Jared's comments make it sound pretty darned hard to learn a language well without actually moving to a Spanish-speaking country. I agree with his answer to #6, but, alas, I rarely get bored enough while eating lunch to take on a whole new endeavor.
